Seattle, 02 July (H.S.): Belgium staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash on Wednesday, with Youri Tielemans scoring twice to send the Red Devils into the Round of 16.
Senegal made an impressive start, taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr. At one stage, the African side appeared to be in complete control and on course for a place in the next round.
Belgium, however, produced a stunning late fightback. Substitute Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th minute to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Three minutes later, Tielemans struck the equaliser in the 89th minute, forcing the match into extra time.
The decisive moment came in the 117th minute when Belgium were awarded a penalty following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. Replays confirmed that Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara had fouled Tielemans inside the penalty area.
Tielemans calmly converted the spot-kick to complete his brace and secure a memorable 3-2 victory for Belgium.
With the win, Belgium advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face the United States.
