New Delhi, 02 July (H.S.): The southwest monsoon has finally reached Delhi-NCR, arriving about five days later than its normal onset date of June 27. Light rainfall accompanied by strong winds on Thursday morning brought much-needed relief to residents from the intense heat and oppressive humidity that had gripped the national capital in recent days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi-NCR is likely to experience light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on July 3, either during the morning or afternoon. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 30°C and 32°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to range between 20°C and 22°C. Similar weather conditions are forecast for July 4 and July 5, although a slight rise in the maximum temperature is expected on Sunday.
The IMD said conditions are favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over the remaining parts of the north Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab during the next three days.
A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coasts. The weather office said active monsoon conditions are likely to prevail over central India during the next five to six days.
Very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over south Gujarat and the Konkan region from July 3 to July 5; over Saurashtra, Kutch and western Madhya Pradesh on July 3 and 4; over Odisha on July 3 and 4; and over Madhya Maharashtra from July 3 to July 5.
The IMD has also forecast widespread rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab between July 5 and July 8; over western and eastern Uttar Pradesh from July 5 to July 7; and across eastern Rajasthan from July 4 to July 8.
In addition, several parts of central, eastern, northeastern, western and peninsular India are expected to receive light to heavy rainfall over the next four to five days, with some areas likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds.
Meanwhile, hot and humid weather conditions are expected to persist over Arunachal Pradesh and the plains of Assam between July 3 and July 6, according to the IMD.
