We don't want flood relief, but freedom from floods:
Engineer Sunil Kushwaha
Prayagraj, 02 July (HS): An important meeting of the Bandh Banao Sangharsh
Morcha was held today under the chairmanship of convener, Engineer Sunil
Kushwaha. The meeting reviewed in detail the preparations for the Keep
Your Promise - Build a Dam march, to be held on Monday at 10:00 am. This
march will begin at the AG Office Square and continue to the District
Magistrate's Office in Prayagraj.
Addressing the meeting, Engineer Sunil Kushwaha said that the flood-affected
people of Prayagraj have been demanding a permanent solution for years, but
have received only assurances. He added that in 2014, a public Satyagraha and
hunger strike were held at Subhash Chowk for 18 days to press for this very
demand. Given the seriousness of the movement and widespread public support,
the then MP from the Phulpur constituency and current Deputy Chief Minister of
Uttar Pradesh, Keshav Prasad Maurya, publicly promised to construct a flood
protection dam. The movement was ended in honor of that assurance, but even
after 12 years, that promise remains unfulfilled.
He said that crores of rupees are spent every year on flood relief and rescue,
but no concrete action is taken toward a permanent solution. As a result, the
people of Prayagraj are forced to face floods, disease, filth, and economic
crisis every year.
Engineer Sunil Kushwaha said that the Keep the Promise - Build the
Dam march is not a movement of any individual or organization, but a mass
movement for the rights and future of the flood-affected people of Prayagraj.
He appealed to students, businessmen, lawyers, teachers, social organizations
and all conscious citizens to make the march a success by attending the AG
Office Square in large numbers on July 20, 2026, at 10 am, and to remind the
government of its unfulfilled promise. Ram Sumer Patel, Manvendra Pratap Singh,
Sukhdev Prasad, Rajaram Kushwaha, Rajkumar and many others were present on this
occasion.
