New Delhi, 18 July (H.S.): Environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after his health deteriorated following a 20-day hunger strike. The hospital said that his condition is currently stable, but he requires continuous medical observation and treatment due to prolonged fasting and dehydration.
In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Charu Bamba said, “Sonam Wangchuk arrived at our hospital at around 7:40 am. Due to prolonged fasting, he is experiencing some weakness and dehydration. Apart from this, all his vital health parameters are within the normal range and remain stable. He is being continuously examined and monitored, and treatment is underway.”
She further stated that Wangchuk is fully conscious and his condition remains stable. Upon his arrival at the hospital, he was initially examined by the Emergency Medicine Department, following which he was admitted under the Department of Medicine.
Dr Bamba explained that due to dehydration, Wangchuk’s electrolyte balance, including levels of sodium and potassium, has been affected. Doctors will first correct the imbalance and then reassess his condition.
