New Delhi, 18 July (H.S.): The social media campaign Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has strongly condemned the hospitalisation of environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, who was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for the past 20 days.
CJP chief Abhijeet Dipke told the media that Delhi Police removed Sonam Wangchuk from the protest site in his absence. He alleged that before taking Wangchuk away, police had kept him under observation at one of his friend’s residences, where he had gone in the morning to attend to his daily routine.
Dipke further alleged that police personnel also pushed and manhandled students present at the protest site. He said that the organisation would continue the peaceful movement and that he himself would begin a hunger strike from Saturday. He appealed to people across the country to continue the protest peacefully and not violate any rules.
CJP national spokesperson Saurav Das alleged that the Delhi Police had cited a High Court order as the reason behind the action, but claimed that the order had been misrepresented. He alleged that the police were using it to justify their action and said that such a misinterpretation amounted to contempt of court.
Meanwhile, students and CJP supporters present at Jantar Mantar raised slogans against the government during the protest.
Delhi Police stated that Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday in view of the High Court’s order and his continuously deteriorating health condition. Police said that while shifting him from the protest site, CJP workers created a standoff. The police appealed to all CJP supporters to vacate Jantar Mantar peacefully.
