New Delhi, 18 July (H.S.): The Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday released a health bulletin on environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, stating that prolonged fasting for 20 days has led to dehydration and a low serum potassium level.

The Medical Superintendent said that Delhi Police brought Wangchuk to Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital at around 7:40 am after he had abstained from food for the past 20 days, resulting in symptoms of weakness. At the time of admission, he was fully conscious, and his pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels were stable. However, clinical examination indicated signs of dehydration.

According to the medical bulletin, blood gas analysis revealed that Wangchuk was suffering from compensated acidosis. His serum potassium level was found to be low, while his blood glucose level measured 78 mg/dL. A repeat investigation confirmed that the serum potassium level remained low.

The bulletin further stated that urinary ketone levels were recorded at 1+ at the time of admission and had increased to 3+ by 1:00 pm on Saturday.

Doctors advised Wangchuk to receive intravenous (IV) fluids. However, according to the hospital, he declined intravenous fluids, oral rehydration fluids, and all other medications. The hospital said that continuous monitoring and counselling are being carried out to ensure that he receives the best possible medical care.

It may be noted that Delhi Police shifted Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning after he had been on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for the past 20 days. The police have also taken action in connection with the social media campaign and protest led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).

The sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar, led by the CJP, continues with a demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination paper leaks. The organisation has also announced a march to Parliament on July 20.
