New Delhi, 18 July (H.S.): Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, on Saturday wrote a letter to the Medical Superintendent of Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, requesting permission to shift the environmentalist to another medical facility of the family’s choice. In the letter, she also raised several questions regarding the hospital’s functioning and the medical information provided about Wangchuk’s condition.

In her letter, Gitanjali alleged that the hospital’s medical team informed her on Saturday morning that Sonam Wangchuk’s potassium level had dropped to 2.9, whereas it was recorded at 4.3 at 4:16 pm the previous day. Questioning the discrepancy, she sought access to the relevant medical reports and details related to the tests.

The letter further stated that the family was not allowed to meet the doctors who were monitoring Wangchuk both digitally and through direct supervision. Gitanjali alleged that the lack of transparency at the hospital had affected the family’s confidence, following which they decided to shift Wangchuk to a medical centre of their choice.

She requested the Medical Superintendent to complete all necessary formalities related to his discharge at the earliest so that Wangchuk could be moved to another hospital for better medical care and required examinations.

Later, while speaking to the media, Gitanjali J. Angmo said that Sonam Wangchuk’s health condition was currently stable and that he would be in a position to travel. She said Wangchuk was on a hunger strike to raise issues related to the future of students and their educational concerns.

She also said that in support of the proposed march to Parliament on July 20, students would organise marches not only in Delhi but also in several cities across the country.

It may be noted that Delhi Police admitted Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning after he had been sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar for the past 20 days. Police have also taken action in connection with the social media campaign and protest activities associated with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
