Thiruvaananthapuram, 17 July(HS) :

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for three northern districts of Kerala, warning of the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall over the next three hours. The alert has been issued for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod, where intense rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is likely in isolated places.

According to the latest weather bulletin, several parts of Kerala are expected to experience intermittent rain throughout the day, with isolated heavy showers forecast in a few regions. The IMD has advised residents in the three districts under the Orange Alert to remain vigilant, as heavy downpours could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, reduced visibility on roads and temporary disruptions to normal life.

Local authorities have been instructed to closely monitor the evolving weather situation and take necessary precautions in vulnerable areas. People living near rivers, streams, hilly regions and locations prone to flooding or landslides have been advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.

Motorists have also been urged to drive carefully, as heavy rain could significantly reduce visibility and make roads slippery. Fishermen and those engaged in activities along the coast have been advised to keep track of the latest weather updates before venturing out.

The IMD said the Orange Alert indicates the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, warranting preparedness by both authorities and the public. Emergency response teams have been asked to remain on standby in case of weather-related incidents.

While the Orange Alert is currently limited to Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod for the next three hours, light to moderate rain is expected in several other parts of the state during the course of the day. The weather department has urged the public to follow official advisories and stay updated through regular forecasts as conditions may change depending on the movement and intensity of the rain-bearing systems.
