Hyderabad, July 17 (HS): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from Telangana authorities over a complaint alleging that a private school in Hyderabad's Saidabad made Islamic religious lessons and prayers compulsory for students.
Acting on the complaint, the Commission issued notices to the Director of School Education, the Hyderabad District Magistrate and the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, directing them to inquire into the allegations and submit a report within two weeks.
According to the complaint before the Commission, the school allegedly assigned Islamic religious lessons and prayers as homework through official school diaries. It also alleged that the school management failed to provide a satisfactory explanation when parents objected, stating that the entries were made by mistake despite similar instructions having appeared earlier.
The NHRC observed that, if found to be true, the allegations prima facie raise concerns of violation of the human rights of the students.
The Commission has directed the concerned authorities to conduct an inquiry into the matter and submit their findings within the stipulated period.
