Atlanta, 16 July (H.S.): Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA after several of its players displayed a banner supporting Argentina's claim over the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) following their 2-1 victory over England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal.
After the match, Argentine players unfurled a banner reading, Las Malvinas Son Argentinas (The Falkland Islands are Argentine) on the pitch before leaving it behind as they exited the field.
Earlier, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni had said he did not want the semifinal against England to be linked to the long-standing sovereignty dispute between the two countries over the Falkland Islands.
Possible Violation of FIFA Regulations
FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body responsible for the Laws of the Game, have consistently maintained a strict stance against the display of political messages, slogans and symbols during official football competitions.
Under the IFAB Laws of the Game, players' equipment or clothing must not display any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. If such regulations are breached, the competition organiser, the relevant national football association or FIFA may initiate disciplinary proceedings against the individuals or teams involved.
Based on these provisions, Argentina could potentially face disciplinary action over the incident.
Long-Running Sovereignty Dispute
The Falkland Islands have remained the subject of a long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
In 1982, the two countries fought a 74-day war over the islands, resulting in the deaths of 655 Argentine soldiers, 255 British service personnel and three civilian island residents.
Argentina continues to assert sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, while the territory remains under British administration. The islands are located approximately 8,000 miles from the United Kingdom and about 300 miles off the Argentine mainland.
Argentina Penalised Previously
This is not the first time Argentina's national team has displayed such a banner.
Before an international friendly against Slovenia in 2014, Argentine players carried a similar banner expressing support for Argentina's claim over the Falkland Islands.
Following that incident, FIFA imposed a fine of £20,000 on the Argentine Football Association.
So far, FIFA has not issued an official statement regarding the latest incident. However, according to international media reports, the governing body is reviewing the matter and could decide whether disciplinary action is warranted.
