Chennai, 14 July (H.S.):A major industrial accident claimed the life of a migrant worker and left four others critically injured after a boiler exploded at a steel melting unit inside the SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Gummidipoondi, Tiruvallur district, on Tuesday. The powerful blast triggered a massive fire, forcing emergency services to launch an extensive rescue operation.
The deceased, identified as Ravi, died on the spot as the explosion ripped through the factory during working hours. Four co-workers suffered severe burn injuries and were rescued from the accident site before being shifted to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing intensive treatment.
The explosion sent flames and thick plumes of smoke soaring into the air, creating panic among workers in neighbouring industrial units. Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the factory and battled the blaze for nearly an hour before bringing it under control, preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent establishments in the industrial estate.
Police secured the area soon after the incident, while rescue teams conducted a thorough search inside the premises to ensure no workers remained trapped. The accident temporarily disrupted operations in the industrial estate as officials assessed the situation.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the explosion originated from the factory's boiler, although the exact cause remains unknown. Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine whether the accident resulted from a technical fault, equipment failure or any lapse in industrial safety procedures. Officials are also expected to examine the maintenance history and safety compliance of the boiler.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over workplace safety in Tiruvallur district, which is home to several large-scale manufacturing units. It follows another major industrial tragedy in the district, where an ammonia gas leak at a shrimp processing factory near Periyapalayam claimed the lives of 18 migrant workers and affected many others before the facility was sealed.
Officials said the investigation is in progress and further action will be taken based on its findings.
