Jorhat (Assam), 13 July (HS): Floodwaters inundated nearly six villages in the Titabor area of Jorhat district early Monday after a ring embankment on the Puthi River breached, severely disrupting normal life in the affected region.
According to local residents, the breached embankment allowed floodwaters to enter around six villages in the Balma area. Several houses and agricultural fields were submerged, damaging food supplies, bedding and other household belongings.
Villagers also reported that several domestic animals were swept away in the floodwaters. Many families have begun moving to higher ground in search of safe shelter.
Following information about the breach, the district administration and disaster response teams rushed to the affected villages to carry out relief and rescue operations.
Residents alleged that the embankment had been in a dilapidated condition for a long time and collapsed due to the lack of timely repairs. They said similar flooding occurs every monsoon and urged the government to implement a permanent solution to prevent recurring disasters.-----------
