Kolkata, 13 July (H.S.): A notorious criminal, Raja Dutta, was shot dead in an alleged gang war at Khalisakota along the Belgharia Expressway in North Dum Dum early on Monday. Two of his associates sustained bullet injuries and are undergoing treatment at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Police have detained five persons in connection with the incident.
According to police sources, Raja Dutta and his associates had reached Khalisakota in the early hours of Monday when members of a rival gang arrived at the spot. An argument reportedly broke out between the two groups, which soon escalated into a violent confrontation.
The police said the rival gang allegedly snatched Dutta's firearm and opened fire using the same weapon. Raja Dutta and two of his associates were shot at point-blank range and collapsed on the spot with serious injuries.
A large police contingent from Khardah Police Station rushed to the scene after receiving information. However, the attackers had already fled. The injured were taken to R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared Raja Dutta dead. The two injured associates remain under treatment.
The police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved in the shooting. The incident has once again raised concerns over security along the Belgharia Expressway, where similar firing incidents have occurred in the past.
