Bhubaneswar, 13 July (H.S.): Odisha has intensified COVID-19 surveillance across its border districts following reports of two COVID-related deaths in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The State Health Department has directed officials to remain on high alert and strengthen preventive measures ahead of the annual Rath Yatra, which is expected to draw lakhs of devotees to Puri.

Director of Public Health, Dr. Rabindra Nath Mishra, on Monday said that all Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs) in districts bordering Andhra Pradesh have been instructed to enhance surveillance and ensure that every suspected COVID-19 case is tested at district headquarters hospitals.

The Health Department stated that Odisha has continued its COVID-19 surveillance despite a significant decline in cases. Regular testing of suspected patients is being carried out across the state, while authorities are closely monitoring the evolving situation in neighbouring states to prevent any potential spread.

With the Rath Yatra approaching, the advisory assumes added significance as massive crowds are expected to gather in Puri for one of the country's largest religious festivals. Health officials have made it clear that anyone exhibiting COVID-like symptoms during the festival period will undergo testing and receive treatment in accordance with the prevailing COVID-19 management protocols.

Issuing a public advisory, Dr. Mishra urged people to remain vigilant and follow basic preventive measures. We have issued strict instructions to the Chief District Medical Officers of all districts bordering Andhra Pradesh to remain on high alert. People should avoid unnecessary social gatherings, wear masks whenever required, and maintain proper hand hygiene. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or weakness, or those who have come into contact with a suspected COVID-19 patient, should immediately undergo testing at the nearest hospital and strictly follow the prescribed treatment protocols and health guidelines, he said.

The Health Department has appealed to the public not to panic but to remain cautious and cooperate with health authorities by adhering to COVID-appropriate behaviour, particularly during the Rath Yatra festivities.
