Birbhum, 13 July (H.S.): Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Deputy Pradhan of Kankalitala Gram Panchayat, Mamon Sheikh, who had been absconding since the change of government in West Bengal, was arrested by Santiniketan Police on Sunday. He was pelted with eggs and allegedly assaulted by a group of people while being produced before a court on Monday.

According to reports, people first threw eggs at the police vehicle carrying Mamon Sheikh. As he was being escorted into the court premises, several individuals hurled raw eggs at him, while some allegedly assaulted him physically. Police managed to bring the situation under control and safely escorted the accused into the courtroom.

Reacting to the arrest, BJP leader Khokon Das alleged that Mamon Sheikh had been involved in several criminal activities and had terrorised local residents. He said no offender would be spared and that Sheikh should receive appropriate punishment.

Police sources said Mamon Sheikh is facing multiple criminal cases, including allegations related to post-poll violence, illegal land grabbing, assault, and rape.

Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bundesh said that Mamon Sheikh, along with Nurul Islam, the TMC block president of Suri-II, had been arrested based on complaints registered against them. He added that the investigation into the cases is underway.
