Guwahati, 12 July (HS): The Assam Government has allocated ₹1,789 crore for the agriculture sector and ₹954 crore for irrigation in the 2026-27 State Budget, aiming to modernise farming, expand irrigation infrastructure and boost agricultural exports.

The Budget proposes a ₹3,000-4,000 crore irrigation expansion plan over the next five years, including pipeline-based irrigation networks, lift irrigation projects and a ₹200 crore allocation for preparing implementation plans.

It also continues financial support for farmers through schemes such as Krishi Sa-Sajuli Yojana, procurement incentives for paddy, maize and mustard and subsidies for dairy farmers. The government will promote organic certification, establish an air cargo facility for agricultural exports and strengthen Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).

Welcoming the Budget, BJP Assam Pradesh spokesperson Pranjal Kalita termed it inclusive and transformative, saying the enhanced investment in agriculture and irrigation would strengthen Assam's rural economy, encourage youth to take up farming and expand market opportunities for farmers.-----------
