Los Angeles, 11 July (H.S.): Super-sub Mikel Merino scored a dramatic late winner for the second consecutive knockout match as Spain secured a place in the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Belgium. Spain will now face France in the semifinal.

Arsenal midfielder Merino was introduced in the 86th minute and made an immediate impact, scoring the decisive goal just two minutes later. Belgium substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens managed to parry Pau Cubarsí's effort, but the rebound fell kindly to Merino, who calmly converted to seal Spain's victory.

Earlier, Merino had also scored the winning goal in the 91st minute against Portugal in the Round of 16, sending Spain into the quarterfinals.

Speaking after the match, Merino said, I have no words. Doing it once was already unbelievable, but doing it again in consecutive matches is even more special. It is not luck; it is the result of preparation. Whenever I step onto the pitch, I am always ready to help the team. My teammates kept telling me that I would score again. I always want to contribute to the team's success.

He added, This is my third match-winning goal for Spain in a major tournament. I also scored in the 119th minute against Germany in the quarterfinal of the last UEFA European Championship. We now have two more matches to win the World Cup, and I hope we can achieve that dream. Sharing these moments with my family is truly a blessing.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente praised Merino's contribution, saying, Mikel is an incredible player. He possesses many outstanding qualities and can perform in several positions. Whenever we need him, he always steps up for the team.

Spain had taken the lead through Fabián Ruiz, but Belgium equalised before halftime with a goal from Charles De Ketelaere. Belgium defended resolutely against sustained Spanish pressure in the second half, but Merino's late strike ultimately proved decisive.

Spain will now take on France in the semifinals. Spain have won each of their previous two major encounters against the French side. Looking ahead to the clash, coach De la Fuente said, Two outstanding teams will face each other. Both will respect one another. We have beaten them in our last two meetings, and we will give everything once again to eliminate them.
