London, 11 July (H.S.): India posted 285 in their first innings on the opening day of the historic Women's Test at Lord's on Friday, the first women's Test ever played at the iconic venue in the 142-year history of Test cricket. Half-centuries from opener Smriti Mandhana (83), captain Harmanpreet Kaur (58), and Deepti Sharma (57) guided India to a competitive total, although England's disciplined bowling attack prevented the visitors from posting a bigger score.

The match marked a historic occasion as Lord's hosted its first-ever women's Test. Before play began, several former England women cricketers were honoured, while both teams had the privilege of being part of the landmark event.

After winning the toss, England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt elected to bowl first. England made an early breakthrough when Lauren Filer dismissed Shafali Verma, claiming the first wicket in the history of a women's Test at Lord's. Lauren Bell and the rest of the bowling attack maintained consistent pressure on the Indian batting lineup throughout the innings.

Mandhana anchored India's innings with a fluent 83, while skipper Harmanpreet contributed a valuable 58. Deepti Sharma added a composed 57 to help India reach a respectable total.

However, England struck at regular intervals to prevent India from building major partnerships. Debutant Maddie Villiers provided a crucial breakthrough by bowling Harmanpreet Kaur, and England's disciplined bowling eventually dismissed India for 285.

At stumps on the opening day, England were 21 for 1 in their first innings. Tammy Beaumont was dismissed early, while Maia Bouchier remained unbeaten on 17. England trail India by 264 runs.
