New Delhi, 11 July (H.S.): More than 17 million taxpayers have filed their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2026–27 so far, with over one million returns submitted in a single day.
The Income Tax Department shared the update in a post on X on Saturday. The department urged taxpayers who have not yet filed their ITR-1 or ITR-2 to complete the process well before the deadline.
The department advised taxpayers not to wait until the last minute. It appealed to them to avoid the year-end rush and conveniently file their Income Tax Returns before the July 31, 2026 deadline through the Income Tax e-filing portal.
ITR-1 (Sahaj) is a simplified return form designed for a large number of small and middle-income taxpayers. The 'Sahaj' form can be filed by resident individuals with an annual income of up to Rs 5 million (Rs 50 lakh), whose income is derived from salary, one house property, and agricultural income of up to Rs 5,000 annually.
ITR-2 is meant for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) whose income does not include profits and gains from business or profession but includes capital gains and other specified sources of income. The last date for filing Income Tax Returns for the Assessment Year 2026–27 is July 31, 2026.
