Dhinakaran triggers fresh debate on possible DMK-AIADMK understanding

Chennai, 11 July (H.S.):AMMK general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran on Saturday fuelled fresh political speculation in Tamil Nadu by asserting that a future alliance between the DMK and the AIADMK cannot be ruled out, saying political alliances are ultimately shaped by circumstances rather than rigid ideological positions.

Addressing reporters in Madurai, Dhinakaran said there was no reason to dismiss the possibility of such a political realignment when Indian politics has repeatedly witnessed rival parties joining hands to achieve larger political objectives. He maintained that alliances should be viewed through a practical political lens instead of preconceived notions.

His remarks came against the backdrop of recent comments by Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan, who argued that the DMK and the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) should remain together to effectively counter the BJP. Dhinakaran questioned why certain political combinations were considered acceptable while others were viewed differently.

He said political parties should not apply different standards while assessing alliances, pointing out that governments are often formed with the support of parties that had been electoral rivals in the past.

“If it is considered acceptable to form a government with the support of parties that were opposed during elections, then there should be no objection to any political alliance,” he said.

Referring to the present political scenario in Tamil Nadu, Dhinakaran said discussions over a possible DMK-AIADMK understanding were misplaced when parties across the country had repeatedly forged alliances despite ideological differences.

“If the TVK can form a government with the support of parties that were part of the DMK alliance, what is wrong with the DMK and the AIADMK coming together?” he asked.

Drawing a historical parallel, Dhinakaran recalled the political understanding between former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai and veteran statesman C. Rajagopalachari, saying Tamil Nadu's political history itself demonstrated that changing circumstances could bring together leaders once considered ideological opponents.

Emphasising that politics is driven by evolving realities rather than permanent friendships or rivalries, he said no political combination should ever be considered impossible, as changing public mandates and political circumstances can reshape alliances at any time.
