New Delhi, 01 July (H.S.): Airtel and Reliance Jio emerged as the top performers in a mobile network quality assessment conducted by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) across North Delhi and adjoining areas, delivering the fastest internet speeds. Vodafone Idea recorded virtually no call drops, while Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) showed the weakest overall performance, with significant network shortcomings.

According to the Ministry of Communications, the drive tests evaluated the quality of mobile services across multiple locations to assess network coverage, call reliability and mobile data performance. Airtel and Jio performed strongly on their 5G networks, whereas MTNL faced serious issues related to network availability and frequent call drops.

The report found that Reliance Jio recorded an average mobile data download speed of about 249 Mbps in North Delhi, followed by Airtel at 179 Mbps. Vodafone Idea registered an average speed of around 24 Mbps, while MTNL managed only about 4 Mbps. Similar results were observed along the airport route, where Jio and Airtel again delivered the highest data speeds.

In terms of voice call performance, Airtel experienced only three dropped calls out of 452 test calls, while Jio recorded four dropped calls out of 459. Vodafone Idea did not register any call drops during the testing period. MTNL, however, recorded 48 dropped calls out of 362, reflecting the poorest performance among the four operators.

The assessment also measured instances of speech interruption during calls. Vodafone Idea recorded the highest number of speech mute incidents, with 24 occurrences during the tests.

The Ministry said the drive tests were conducted between April 13 and April 17. The assessment covered a 374-kilometre city route, a 58-kilometre airport route, 13 key locations and walk tests in densely populated areas.

TRAI said the findings have been shared with the telecom service providers to help them improve the quality and reliability of their networks.
