TOKYO, June 5 (HS/RIA Novosti) - Japan and the United States plan to invest a total of $1 billion over five years in a strategic partnership to apply artificial intelligence to scientific research, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said on Friday.

The partnership includes a strategic investment plan totaling $1 billion over the next five years, aimed at large-scale international joint research and development in various advanced scientific and technological fields, including AI, as well as strengthening the computing resource environment, Kihara said at a press conference.

Japan and the US announced a strategic partnership that will link Japanese initiatives in the field of AI for science with the US Genesis Mission, he noted, adding that the format also provides for the mutual use of computing resources in international joint research and development.

Amid the further intensification of competition for leadership in key technologies, AI and other advanced technologies are fundamental technologies that support the country's future competitiveness and economic security, Kihara said.

He added that cooperation will be expanded in various advanced scientific and technological fields, including quantum information technology, nuclear fusion, biotechnology, critical materials, and particle physics.
