New Delhi, June 30 (HS): The Central Government on Tuesday extended the deadline for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) by one month, allowing taxpayers to submit appeals until July 31.
The Finance Ministry said the decision was taken after receiving representations from various stakeholders highlighting technical difficulties in filing appeals due to heavy traffic on the GSTAT portal.
According to the ministry, nearly 30,000 appeals were filed over the past 15 days, with daily filings peaking at around 5,500, resulting in congestion on the portal.
The government had earlier notified June 30, 2026, as the last date for filing appeals before the GSTAT, which became operational in September last year.
The ministry advised taxpayers to file their appeals well before the revised deadline and avoid waiting until the last date to minimise the risk of portal congestion.
The government has notified one Principal Bench of the GSTAT in New Delhi and 31 State Benches across the country. More than 4.8 lakh cases are currently pending before appellate authorities and are expected to be transferred to the Tribunal.
The GST Appellate Tribunal was established to provide a dedicated mechanism for resolving disputes under the Goods and Services Tax regime, replacing the earlier practice of taxpayers approaching High Courts or the Supreme Court directly on such matters.
