
New Delhi, 30 June (H.S.): The Central government has decided to extend the tenure of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Ravi Agrawal by six months. His new term will run from July 1 to December 31 this year.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the reappointment has been made on a contractual basis with relaxation of the applicable recruitment rules. The order has been directed to take immediate effect.
Ravi Agrawal is a 1988-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). He was appointed Chairman of the CBDT in June 2024. Prior to that, he had been serving as Member (Administration) of the CBDT since July 2023. His tenure had earlier been extended for one year, from July 2025 to June 2026.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes is the apex policy-making body of the Income Tax Department. It is responsible for the administration of direct tax laws, formulation of tax policy, strengthening tax compliance, and improving taxpayer services. The Board is headed by the Chairman and may have up to six members at the level of Special Secretary. Functioning under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance, the CBDT is responsible for direct tax collection and policy reforms in the country.
