Namakkal , 29 June (H.S.): Namakkal, located in western Tamil Nadu, has earned the distinction of being the 'Egg Capital of India', emerging over the past four decades as the country's largest commercial egg production and export hub. What began as a small cluster of poultry farms in the 1970s has transformed into one of the world's most integrated egg-producing ecosystems, making the district a vital contributor to India's food security, rural economy and agricultural exports.
The district is estimated to produce between six and seven crore eggs every day through more than 1,100 commercial layer farms. Nearly 40 per cent of this production is supplied to neighbouring Kerala, while large quantities are transported to Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and several northern states. The district also serves as India's principal egg export centre, with around one crore eggs exported daily under normal market conditions to countries including the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, the Maldives and several African nations.
The poultry industry forms the backbone of Namakkal's economy and has created a comprehensive ecosystem that extends far beyond egg production. Alongside layer farms, the district is home to hatcheries, breeding farms, poultry feed manufacturing units, veterinary pharmaceutical companies, egg grading and packing centres, cold storage facilities, transport operators and export firms. Together, these sectors generate an estimated annual business turnover of between ₹35,000 crore and ₹40,000 crore, making poultry one of the most valuable rural industries in India.
Egg production alone contributes an estimated ₹12,000 crore annually, depending on prevailing market prices. Poultry feed manufacturing accounts for an even larger share of the industry's revenues, with more than 1,500 feed mills operating in and around Namakkal. Feed constitutes nearly 70 per cent of the cost of egg production, making maize and soybean prices critical factors influencing the profitability of poultry farms.
Namakkal dominates India's shell egg exports, accounting for an estimated 90 to 95 per cent of the country's overseas egg shipments. Exporters have developed sophisticated grading, packaging and cold-chain logistics systems that enable fresh eggs to reach international markets within days of production. The Gulf region remains the largest destination because of its proximity and sustained demand, although exporters have also expanded shipments to countries in South Asia and Africa.
India is currently the world's second-largest egg producer, with an annual production of more than 142 billion eggs. While Andhra Pradesh leads the country in overall egg production, Tamil Nadu ranks second, and Namakkal alone contributes nearly two-thirds of the state's total output. The district's remarkable productivity has made it one of the most important centres of the Indian poultry industry.
The sector provides direct and indirect employment to more than two lakh people, including poultry farm workers, veterinarians, transport operators, feed mill employees, packaging workers and exporters. Thousands of small and medium farmers are integrated into organised production systems through contract farming arrangements with larger poultry companies, ensuring stable production throughout the year. Namakkal's well-developed transport network has also supported rapid movement of eggs to domestic and export markets.
Despite its success, the industry faces several challenges. Fluctuations in maize and soybean prices frequently increase production costs, while disease outbreaks such as avian influenza can disrupt trade. Exporters are also vulnerable to geopolitical developments and shipping disruptions. Rising freight charges and input costs continue to put pressure on profit margins even during periods of strong demand.
Industry leaders believe the future growth of Namakkal's poultry sector will depend on expanding exports, diversifying into processed egg products such as egg powder and liquid egg, adopting advanced technologies and improving biosecurity standards. With its highly integrated production network, experienced entrepreneurs, robust logistics infrastructure and strong presence in domestic and international markets, Namakkal continues to reinforce its position as India's undisputed egg capital and one of the country's most successful agricultural export clusters.
