New Delhi, 28 June (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend Seychelles' Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations on Sunday as the Guest of Honour, marking the second day of his three-day State visit to the Indian Ocean island nation. The visit underscores the close strategic partnership between India and Seychelles, with both countries expected to further strengthen cooperation in defence, maritime security, development, and capacity building.

Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie on Sunday. The discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in maritime security, the blue economy, infrastructure, healthcare, renewable energy, and regional stability in the Indian Ocean Region.

On Saturday, the first day of his visit, Prime Minister Modi received a ceremonial welcome from President Herminie upon his arrival in Victoria. The two leaders visited the Seychelles National Botanical Garden, where they participated in a joint tree-planting ceremony and planted a Coco de Mer sapling, a national symbol of Seychelles. They also visited the Aldabra giant tortoise enclosure, highlighting the two countries' shared commitment to biodiversity conservation and environmental protection.

Later, Prime Minister Modi handed over the India-built Fast Patrol Vessel Lespwar to the Seychelles Coast Guard, along with six ambulances, ten utility vehicles, and five laser radial boats for the Seychelles Defence Forces. The assistance is aimed at enhancing the island nation's maritime surveillance, emergency response, and public service capabilities.

Addressing a State dinner hosted in his honour on Saturday evening, Prime Minister Modi described the India-Seychelles partnership as steady, strong and long-lasting. He said the two nations would continue to work together for shared prosperity and security, adding that India remains committed to supporting Seychelles' development priorities.

President Patrick Herminie, in his remarks at the State banquet, described India as a steadfast friend and a trusted development partner. He noted that the two countries have enjoyed close and mutually beneficial relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1976, with India playing a significant role in infrastructure development, healthcare, defence cooperation, education, and maritime security.

Sunday's National Day celebrations will also feature the participation of Indian military personnel. A 32-member marching contingent from the Assam Regiment, along with an Indian Navy contingent and military band, will take part in the parade, reflecting the strong defence partnership and longstanding people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Prime Minister Modi's visit, which continues until June 29, coincides with the 50th anniversary of Seychelles' Independence and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, reaffirming New Delhi's commitment to strengthening its engagement with the Indian Ocean region.
