New York, 26 June (H.S.): Ecuador produced a spirited comeback to defeat Germany 2-1 on Thursday and secure a place in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Needing a victory to stay in the tournament, the South American side recovered from an early setback to claim a memorable win.
Germany made an aggressive start and took the lead in just the second minute when Leroy Sané found the back of the net to put his side ahead 1-0. It was Sané's first goal in a major international tournament.
After conceding early, Ecuador responded with a series of attacking moves. Having failed to score despite 39 attempts earlier in the tournament, the South Americans finally broke through with their 40th effort. Nilson Angulo curled a superb shot beyond goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to level the score at 1-1.
The equaliser boosted Ecuador's confidence, and the team continued to press forward. In the 77th minute, Gonzalo Plata scored from close range to give Ecuador a decisive 2-1 lead.
Germany pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Ecuador's resolute defence denied them any clear opportunities.
With the victory, Ecuador secured qualification for the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Germany, who had already booked their place in the knockout stage before the match, advanced despite suffering their first defeat of the tournament.
