India has organised its first-ever exhibition of premium mango varieties in Iceland as part of efforts to promote exports of Indian mangoes and strengthen agricultural trade between the two countries.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the promotional events were organised by the Embassy of India in Reykjavik in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The events were held on June 24 in Reykjavik and on June 25 in Akureyri, northern Iceland. They showcased the rich diversity of Indian mango varieties, including Dasheri, Chausa, Langra and Kesar, while highlighting their immense export potential.

According to the ministry, Indian Ambassador R. Ravindra highlighted the unique qualities of India's world-renowned mango varieties and emphasised the significant potential for expanding exports of Indian mangoes to Iceland. Second Secretary at the Indian Embassy, Anisha Tomar, also delivered a presentation on mango production in India, noting that India is the world's largest producer of mangoes.

Meanwhile, Sveinn K. Einarsson, Director of Trade Agreements at Iceland's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, shared his views on the opportunities created by the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). He said the agreement could significantly enhance the import of Indian mangoes into Iceland.

The Ministry of Commerce said interactions between the Indian mission and local consumers revealed that Icelanders are particularly fond of mangoes, especially in smoothies, desserts and fruit salads. This, the ministry noted, indicates strong market potential for Indian mangoes in Iceland.

Notably, Iceland currently imports most of its mangoes from Thailand, Brazil, Cambodia, Ghana and Peru. The limited availability of alternative suppliers has enabled these countries to establish a strong presence in the Icelandic market. In 2025, Iceland imported mangoes worth approximately US$3.3 million, of which nearly US$1 million worth of imports came from Thailand alone.
