Lucknow, 25 June (HS): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi
Adityanath regularly criticizes the Emergency (invoked by Indira Gandhi's
Congress administration on June 25, 1975), calling it a terrible chapter in
Indian democracy. He frequently emphasizes many essential elements concerning
this period: Strangling the Constitution: CM Yogi claims that the Congress
Party colluded to undermine the nation's constitutional soul by imprisoning
opposition leaders, limiting civil liberties, and destroying democratic
institutions.
On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Adityanath went to
platforms such as X (previously Twitter) to honor the activists who struggled
to safeguard the Constitution and media freedom during that time. He
consistently criticizes the 1975 Emergency as a terrible chapter and a bad day
in Indian democracy. He has been a strong critic of the event, specifically
criticizing the Congress party's behavior throughout this time period. He
claims that the Emergency, declared by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress
government on June 25, 1975, was a plot to destroy the nation's constitutional
essence and undermine democracy. He notes that the time had a significant
impact on civil freedoms, basic rights, and freedom of expression.
Historical Retaliation: He repeatedly asks that Congress apologize to the
nation, particularly to Dalits and the disadvantaged, for their conduct during
this period.
Recognizing individuals who fought the Emergency, the UP government promised
cashless medical services for residents (and their families) imprisoned during
that time.
Unchanged Congress Mindset: Adityanath claims that, while the faces of Congress
leadership have changed, the totalitarian nature of the party remains
unchanged.
“25 June 1975 stands as a dark chapter in the history of
Indian democracy, when the 'Emergency' was imposed in an attempt to crush the
constitutional soul of the nation.
The darkness of the 'Emergency' imposed by the Congress in
the arrogance of power dealt a deep blow to the freedom of expression and civil
rights. To all the great democracy warriors who endured harsh tortures during
that difficult time and fought to protect democracy, my heartfelt salutations a
millionfold,” he opined in a post on X.
