Guwahati, 25 June (HS): A series of river-related incidents reported from different parts of Assam on Thursday have raised serious concerns over navigation safety as water levels in the Brahmaputra continue to rise during the ongoing monsoon season.

In Barpeta district, a major boat accident was reported at Moiradia Ghat where a goods-laden mechanized country boat (Bhutbhuti) sank in the Brahmaputra River. The vessel, carrying various commodities, reportedly went under water due to adverse river conditions. No casualties were immediately reported, though the incident resulted in significant material losses.

In another incident, panic gripped Dhubri after a country boat carrying passengers, including school students, capsized in the river. Around 15 to 20 school-going children and several other passengers were on board when the mishap occurred. Fortunately, swift action by local residents helped rescue all those stranded, averting what could have turned into a major tragedy.

The back-to-back incidents have come at a time when the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are witnessing a steady rise in water levels across several districts of the state, increasing the risks associated with river transport.

Meanwhile, the Inland Water Transport Department has imposed a temporary suspension on the Guwahati–North Guwahati ferry service. According to an emergency advisory issued by the department, ferry operations have been halted from Wednesday due to the rising water level and strong river currents in the Brahmaputra, with authorities prioritizing passenger safety.

Officials have urged commuters and river users to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines until conditions improve. The recent incidents have once again highlighted the challenges of river transportation during the peak monsoon season in Assam.-----------
