New Delhi, 25 June (H.S.):
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday visited Sanjay Lake in East Delhi to review the ongoing restoration and rejuvenation works being undertaken at the site. Officials from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) were also present during the inspection.
During the visit, DDA officials briefed the Lieutenant Governor on the phased action plan aimed at reviving the 52-acre lake and the adjoining 165-acre protected forest area surrounding it.
In a post on social media platform X, the Lieutenant Governor said that several key initiatives are being implemented to transform this important “blue-green” ecosystem into a clean, accessible, and year-round recreational space for residents. He directed the Delhi Jal Board to expedite repairs to the pipeline supplying treated water from the Dallupura Sewage Treatment Plant to ensure a continuous flow of clean water into the lake.
He noted that efforts to conserve and rejuvenate the lake are already underway, including the regular removal of weeds, clearing of algae, and strengthening of embankment slopes through the use of geotextile technology.
According to the Lieutenant Governor, upcoming phases of the project will focus on improving stagnant water circulation, enhancing groundwater recharge through the installation of bioswales, implementing bioremediation measures, and improving dissolved oxygen levels in the water by installing aerators and fountains.
He further stated that 5,000 native trees will be planted to enrich the ecological biodiversity of the area.
The Lieutenant Governor reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to restoring Sanjay Lake to its former glory and ensuring its long-term ecological sustainability and public utility.
