London, June 22 (HS/RIA NOVOSTI): British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Labour Party, saying a leadership election would be held to choose his successor, while he would continue as Prime Minister until the process is completed.

Speaking at Downing Street, Starmer said he had informed King Charles III of his decision and described it as being in the national interest.

Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party, Starmer said.

He said the Labour Party's National Executive Committee would begin the leadership election process on July 9. According to the proposed timetable, the contest is expected to conclude before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September.

Starmer said he would remain in office as Prime Minister during the leadership contest and ensure an orderly transition of power to his successor.

The announcement comes amid growing pressure within sections of the Labour Party and speculation over Starmer's political future in recent weeks.

Starmer led Labour to victory in the 2024 general election and has served as Prime Minister since then.
