Los Angeles, 22 June (H.S.):
Belgium were left frustrated after being held to a 0-0 draw by Iran in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G encounter on Sunday. Despite dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities throughout the match, Belgium failed to breach Iran's resolute defence, which stood firm to earn a valuable point.
Played in Southern California, the match witnessed strong support for Belgium from the spectators. However, Iran produced a disciplined defensive performance to secure a share of the points.
Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand emerged as the standout performer of the match. He made seven crucial saves and repeatedly denied Belgium's persistent attacking efforts to preserve a clean sheet.
Belgium enjoyed greater control of possession and created multiple chances, but the team suffered a major setback in the second half when defender Nathan Ngoy was shown a red card and sent off. He was dismissed after fouling Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi, who was advancing towards goal.
Despite being reduced to 10 players, Belgium continued to press forward in search of a breakthrough. However, Iran's well-organised and disciplined defence successfully withstood the pressure until the final whistle.
Following the draw, Iran moved to two points in the Group G standings and will next face Egypt in Seattle on Friday. Belgium also have two points and will take on New Zealand in their next group-stage fixture in Vancouver.
