Vancouver, 22 June (H.S.):
Powered by a stellar performance from star forward Mohamed Salah, Egypt scripted history on Monday by securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory. In a Group G encounter at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Egypt came from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1, recording their maiden win in World Cup history.
Salah and Mostafa Ziko each scored a goal and also provided an assist, while Trezeguet added the third goal for Egypt. After trailing at halftime, the Pharaohs produced an impressive second-half comeback to claim all three points and move to the top of Group G.
New Zealand made a bright start to the match and took the lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman headed home from a corner kick. The Kiwis maintained their 1-0 advantage until halftime.
Egypt came out with renewed attacking intent after the break. In the 58th minute, Mostafa Ziko headed in a superb cross from Mohamed Hany to level the score at 1-1.
Salah then put Egypt ahead in the 67th minute, scoring his first goal of the tournament. The strike also marked the 68th goal of his international career. After finding the net, Salah celebrated by raising his fist toward the crowd before being embraced by his teammates.
Trezeguet sealed Egypt's victory in the 82nd minute with a powerful header from a corner, scoring his first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.
Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made four crucial saves during the match, while New Zealand goalkeeper Max Crocombe also recorded four saves.
The victory places Egypt in a commanding position in Group G. They will face Iran in their final group-stage match on Friday. New Zealand, still searching for their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory, will take on Belgium on the same day.
Speaking after the match, Salah said the victory would be remembered as one of the greatest achievements in Egyptian football history for years to come. He also praised the Egyptian supporters, saying it felt as though the team was playing on home soil.
