Seatle, 20 June (H.S.):
Co-hosts the United States secured their place in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating Australia 2-0 in a Group D encounter on Friday. The victory marked the Americans' second consecutive win of the tournament, ensuring qualification for the knockout stage with one group match still to play.
The United States made an aggressive start and took the lead in the 11th minute. Forward Folarin Balogun produced an impressive run and sent the ball into the heart of Australia's defence. In an attempt to clear the danger, Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally turned the ball into his own net, giving the hosts an early advantage.
Australia attempted to recover after conceding the opening goal, but the United States continued to dominate possession and maintain attacking pressure throughout the first half.
Just before the interval, the hosts doubled their lead. Alex Freeman headed the ball into the net from close range. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the decision was overturned and the goal was awarded, sparking celebrations among the American supporters inside the stadium.
The victory lifted the United States to six points from two matches, guaranteeing their progression from Group D and eliminating any possibility of an early exit from the tournament.
The United States will now face Türkiye in their final Group D fixture at Los Angeles Stadium, while Australia, who remain on three points, must defeat Paraguay to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
