ANKARA, June 20 (HS/RIA Novosti) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara is engaged in intensive diplomatic efforts to achieve a lasting peace between Iran and the United States and supports ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Turkish presidential administration, these remarks were made during a meeting between Erdogan and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the Dolmabahce working office in Istanbul.
Turkey is conducting intensive diplomatic work to achieve a lasting peace between Iran and the United States. We attach great importance to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, Erdogan's office quoted the Turkish leader as saying.
On June 14, Iran and the United States confirmed that work on a memorandum of understanding had been completed. Overnight into June 18, the two countries remotely signed the document that provides for an end to the military conflict that began on February 28.
The memorandum will give the two countries 60 days to negotiate a final deal on the Iranian nuclear issue and US sanctions. Additionally, it sets a timeline for the United States to lift its naval blockade, and for Iran to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
