SYDNEY, June 2 (H.S.): Former England star all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has been appointed as the new head coach of Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Sydney Thunder. He succeeds Trevor Bayliss in the role.
The 48-year-old Flintoff has signed a two-year contract with Sydney Thunder. The appointment marks the first overseas coaching assignment of his career. Previously, he served as head coach of the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred and has also worked with the England Lions in recent years. In addition, he has held an advisory role with England’s limited-overs teams.
Flintoff is no stranger to the Big Bash League, having represented Brisbane Heat during the 2014–15 season. He played seven matches for the franchise in what proved to be the final phase of his playing career.
Speaking after his appointment, Flintoff said through the franchise, “I’m incredibly excited to get to Sydney and begin working with the team. There is tremendous potential within this squad. Looking at the players, support staff and the franchise as a whole, I believe there is an opportunity to achieve something special here.”
He added that the experience of senior players such as David Warner, Chris Green and Daniel Sams, combined with the emerging talent of Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes and Tanveer Sangha, would provide the team with a strong foundation for success.
Former Australian cricketers Shane Watson and Dan Christian were also reportedly considered for the position, but Sydney Thunder ultimately placed its trust in Flintoff.
His predecessor, Trevor Bayliss, stepped down from the role in February. During Bayliss’ six-season tenure, Sydney Thunder struggled for consistency and finished at the bottom of the BBL standings in each of the last two seasons.
In an official statement, Sydney Thunder described Flintoff’s appointment as the “most significant off-field acquisition” in the club’s history. General Manager Trent Copeland called it “a landmark day in the history of Sydney Thunder.”
