New Delhi, 19 June (H.S.):
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Friday said that India's passport services have become faster, more accessible, and truly democratic. Addressing the Annual Conference of Regional Passport Officers, he noted that the demand for Indian talent and its global reputation are growing rapidly. In this context, he said, efficient and seamless passport services will serve as a crucial foundation for a prosperous, globally connected, and developed India.
Jaishankar said that India's foreign policy is establishing the country as a Vishwa Bandhu (Friend of the World), resulting in the Indian passport being viewed with increasing respect and trust across the globe. He emphasised that obtaining a passport should not be a matter of struggle but a fundamental right of every citizen.
He stated that more than 13.8 million passports have been issued during the financial year 2025–26, reflecting the rising aspirations of Indian citizens and their expanding participation in global opportunities.
The External Affairs Minister pointed out that in 2014, India had only 77 Passport Seva Kendras, with approximately 8.3 million passports issued annually. As a result of the government's extensive expansion drive, the country now has 544 operational passport service centres, comprising 93 Passport Seva Kendras and 454 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras.
Jaishankar said that Passport Seva Programme Version 2.0 has redefined global mobility in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). According to him, a passport is not merely a travel document but also a vital instrument for economic progress, international trade, and national identity.
