The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has strengthened its position as India's leading institution for higher education and research by securing the 118th rank globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027. The institute improved from its 123rd position in the previous edition, reaffirming its status as the country's top-ranked academic and research institution.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2027, IIT Delhi has also equalled the highest global ranking ever achieved by an Indian institution. The improvement was driven by significant gains across several key performance indicators.

In the Employer Reputation category, IIT Delhi climbed 11 places to rank 39th globally. This indicator measures how employers worldwide perceive graduates from an institution in terms of their preparedness for the workforce.

The institute also recorded a remarkable improvement of 60 places in the Employment Outcomes category, which assesses graduates' employability, career success, and leadership impact across diverse sectors.

In addition, IIT Delhi advanced by 26 places in the Citations per Faculty indicator, a measure that evaluates the quality and global impact of an institution's scientific research.

Commenting on the achievement, IIT Delhi Dean (Planning) and Head of the Ranking Cell, Professor Somnath Bandyopadhyay Roy, said the institute remains committed to providing world-class and affordable technical education while emerging as a preferred destination for researchers from across the globe. He added that the introduction of a new curriculum, the development of modern infrastructure, and expanding international collaborations would further strengthen the institute's academic excellence and global influence in the coming years. He emphasised that rankings are not the institute's objective but rather the outcome of its sustained efforts toward excellence.

Over the past four years, IIT Delhi has improved its global standing by 79 places. The institute was ranked 197th in the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings and has now climbed to 118th.

Notably, in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released in March 2026, several engineering and technology disciplines at IIT Delhi were placed among the world's top 50. These included Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering.

In the Engineering and Technology category, IIT Delhi secured the 36th position globally, maintaining its position as India's leading institution in the field.
