Boston, 17 June (H.S.): Norway made a winning start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Iraq in their Group I clash on Tuesday, powered by a brilliant brace from star striker Erling Haaland.
Making their return to the FIFA World Cup after 28 years, Norway delivered an impressive performance to secure all three points.
Norway took the lead in the 29th minute when Haaland found the back of the net to put his side ahead 1-0.
Iraq, however, responded positively and equalised in the 39th minute through Ayman Hussein, making it 1-1.
The parity did not last long. Just before halftime, Haaland capitalised on a costly defensive error by Iraq, intercepting an inaccurate back pass before calmly slotting the ball into the net to restore Norway's lead.
Norway maintained control throughout the second half. In the 76th minute, Leo Østigård headed home from a corner to score the team's third goal and put the result beyond doubt.
In stoppage time, Iraq's Ayman Hussein inadvertently scored an own goal, sealing a comprehensive 4-1 victory for Norway.
With the emphatic win, Norway moved to the top of Group I ahead of France on goal difference. Iraq, meanwhile, will be aiming for a stronger performance in their next fixture as they look to bounce back from the opening defeat.
