Washington, 16 June (HS): US President Donald Trump has said Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons as part of a peace understanding aimed at ending the conflict between Washington and Tehran.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had agreed to never have a nuclear weapon and dismissed reports that the United States was providing financial assistance to Tehran, describing such reports as fake news.

Trump's remarks came after the United States and Iran announced a preliminary understanding intended to advance the peace process and extend the existing ceasefire.

According to statements from both sides, discussions will continue on issues including Iran's nuclear programme, sanctions-related matters and other outstanding concerns.

Trump also said vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz had resumed and expressed confidence that maritime traffic in the strategic waterway would return to normal levels.

However, details regarding the implementation of the understanding, including issues related to sanctions, frozen assets and long-term arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz, are yet to be finalised.

Iranian officials have also indicated that further negotiations will be required on several aspects of the agreement.
