MOSCOW, June 15 (RIA Novosti) - The European Union welcomes the agreement reached by the United States and Iran and praises the diplomatic efforts, European Council President Antonio Costa said on Monday.

I welcome the agreement just announced between Washington and Tehran. I look forward to an end to this costly war and to the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. I commend the tireless diplomatic efforts of all those who made this deal possible, Costa wrote on X.

The agreement follows months of negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at reducing tensions over Iran's nuclear programme and regional security issues. Reports indicate that the proposed understanding includes commitments related to Iran's nuclear activities, sanctions relief and measures to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transit routes.

The European Union has consistently supported diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes over Iran's nuclear programme and has called for dialogue as an alternative to military escalation. Brussels has also expressed concern over disruptions to shipping and energy supplies resulting from tensions in the Gulf region.
