Ludhiana, 13 June (H.S.):
India’s rising athletics star Tejas Shirse created history on Saturday by setting a new national record in the men’s 110m hurdles at the Indian Athletics Series-9 held at Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana, Punjab.
The 24-year-old hurdler clocked an impressive 13.27 seconds to win the event, surpassing his own previous national record. Shirse had earlier established the national mark of 13.41 seconds in 2024.
His latest effort also ranks as the sixth-fastest time recorded by an Asian athlete in the men’s 110m hurdles this season. The outstanding performance enabled him to secure qualification for the upcoming Commonwealth Games later this year.
Shirse had already booked his place at the forthcoming Asian Games. He earned qualification after winning the gold medal at the Indian Athletics Series-6 held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai last month.
With a string of impressive performances in recent months, Tejas Shirse has emerged as one of the most promising figures in Indian athletics. His consistent progress has significantly raised expectations of a podium finish at major international competitions in the near future.
As he continues to break barriers and improve his timings, Shirse is increasingly being viewed as one of India’s strongest medal prospects on the global stage.
