
New Delhi, 12 June (H.S.): Following the missile attack on the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Setebelo off the coast of Oman, the Government of India has issued round-the-clock helpline numbers to provide immediate assistance to Indian seafarers and their families.
The helpline services have been activated by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to address concerns related to the incident and to support affected families. The designated contact numbers are: WhatsApp Call (MMDAC) +91 8657549760; alternate numbers +91 2222613606 and +91 8657549752; domestic toll-free grievance redressal number 1800-889-7768; international toll-free number +1-888-988-0256; and grievance redressal WhatsApp Call number +91 8655856830.
The ministry, through the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), is maintaining continuous surveillance of maritime activity in and around the sensitive waters of the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman and adjoining areas.
According to official information, the missile strike occurred on June 10, approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar, targeting the medium-range oil tanker MT Setebelo. The vessel was carrying a crew of 28 members, including 24 Indian nationals.
Three Indian seafarers lost their lives in the attack, while all other crew members were rescued safely.
In the wake of the incident, the Directorate General of Shipping has advised all Indian seafarers serving aboard Indian-flagged and foreign-flagged vessels operating through conflict-prone maritime zones to exercise extreme caution.
The government has also issued a strong advisory to ship operators and shipping companies, directing them to strictly adhere to maritime security protocols and remain vigilant regarding guidelines and advisories issued by Indian authorities and international maritime agencies from time to time.
Shipping companies and vessel operators have been instructed to immediately report any untoward incident or emergency to the Directorate General of Shipping so that prompt action can be taken.
The Government of India reiterated that, amid the current geopolitical uncertainties affecting maritime routes in the region, it stands firmly with Indian seafarers and their families and remains fully committed to ensuring their safety, security and well-being.
