New Delhi, 12 June (H.S.): British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the Air India AI-171 tragedy, marking the first anniversary of one of the deadliest aviation disasters involving Indian passengers in recent years.
Cameron visited the crash site in the Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad and offered floral tributes in memory of the 260 people who lost their lives in the accident on June 12 last year. The solemn ceremony was attended by officials and members of the local community, who gathered to remember the victims and honour their memory.
The Air India flight, operating from Ahmedabad to London, crashed shortly after departure on June 12, 2025. The disaster claimed the lives of 241 passengers and crew members on board, along with 19 people on the ground. Only one passenger survived the crash.
During her visit, Cameron expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of those who perished in the tragedy. The tribute reflected the close ties between India and the United Kingdom, particularly as a significant number of passengers on the flight were travelling to Britain.
The anniversary served as a moment of remembrance for the victims and their families, many of whom continue to cope with the loss of loved ones. Floral tributes and prayers were offered at the site where the aircraft came down, transforming the area into a place of reflection and mourning.
The AI-171 crash prompted extensive investigations by aviation authorities and renewed discussions on air safety measures. The tragedy remains deeply etched in public memory due to the high loss of life and its impact on families across multiple countries.
One year after the accident, tributes continue to pour in from public representatives, diplomats and citizens, underscoring the enduring grief caused by the disaster and the collective resolve to remember those who lost their lives.
