IAEA Informed of Loss of All External Power Supply at Zaporozhye NPP - Statement

MOSCOW, June 11 (HS/RIA Novosti) - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Thursday it had been informed that the Zaporozhye (Zaporizhzhia) Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in the Zaporozhye (Zaporizhzhia) region lost all external power supply on June 10 following an attack on a substation.

The IAEA has been informed that, for the 19th time since the beginning of the military conflict, the Zaporizhzhya NPP lost all off-site power at around 21:00 [18:00 GMT] local time last night following an attack on an electrical substation on the other side of the Dnipro [Dnieper] River, the agency said.

According to the IAEA, the plant is currently relying on backup diesel generators.

The ZNPP is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River near the city of Energodar (Enerhodar). The facility came under Russian ownership in October 2022. Power generation at the plant’s reactors was halted in September 2022, and since April 2024 all reactor units have been in cold shutdown mode.

Russian Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said on Wednesday that the threats posed by Ukraine to the plant and its satellite city exceeded all acceptable limits.
