PARIS, June 1 (H.S.): Brazil’s young tennis sensation Joao Fonseca continued his remarkable run at the French Open 2026, defeating two-time runner-up Casper Ruud in the Round of 16 to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Fonseca will now face Czech youngster Jakub Mensik for a spot in the last four.
The 19-year-old Brazilian produced another outstanding performance to overcome Ruud 7-5, 7-6 (10/8), 5-7, 6-2 in a gripping contest. With the victory in the night session at Roland Garros, Fonseca reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career.
Fonseca had already created a sensation earlier in the tournament by defeating Novak Djokovic. He once again showcased his immense talent and composure with a memorable victory over Ruud.
Having staged remarkable comebacks from two sets down against Dino Prizmic in the second round and Djokovic in the third round, Fonseca displayed a more mature and controlled performance in this encounter.
Ruud, a two-time French Open finalist, fought hard throughout the match, but Fonseca proved superior in the crucial moments and maintained his grip on the contest. The marathon battle lasted nearly three hours and 55 minutes and concluded at 12:27 a.m. local time on Monday.
The victory has established Fonseca as one of the tournament’s most talked-about players, and he will now set his sights on securing a place in the semi-finals.
