Barpeta Road (Assam), 01 June (HS): In a matter of serious public health concern, the Food Safety Department conducted a late-night raid at the wholesale vegetable market in Barpeta Road and seized 15 sacks of pointed gourd (parwal) allegedly treated with toxic chemicals.

According to officials, the vegetables had reportedly been submerged in water mixed with hazardous chemical substances, posing a potential threat to consumers' health. The alleged practice came to light after visuals capturing the chemically treated vegetables surfaced, triggering widespread concern among residents and authorities.

During the operation, the Food Safety Department intercepted the consignment while it was being prepared for export and distribution to various markets. The seized sacks were taken into custody for further examination and necessary legal action.

Authorities have expressed concern over the use of harmful chemicals in food products and stated that strict action would be taken against those found responsible. The incident has raised fresh questions about food safety standards and monitoring mechanisms in wholesale markets, with consumers demanding stringent checks to prevent such practices from endangering public health.-----------
