New Delhi, June 1 (H.S.): Justice Amit Sharma of the Delhi High Court has recused himself from hearing the bail petition of Tahir Hussain, an accused in the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. The matter will now be heard by a bench that does not include Justice Amit Sharma. The next hearing has been scheduled for June 10.

Tahir Hussain’s bail application was listed before a vacation bench headed by Justice Saurabh Banerjee. However, Justice Amit Sharma, the other member of the bench, withdrew from the proceedings.

Earlier, on January 29, the Karkardooma Court had rejected Hussain’s bail plea. That order has since been challenged before the Delhi High Court. Hussain is accused of conspiring in the 2020 Delhi riots and is also an accused in the murder case of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma.

According to the case record, Ankit Sharma’s father, Ravinder Kumar, approached Dayalpur Police Station on February 26, 2020, and stated that his son had returned from work on February 25 and had gone out in the evening to purchase some items. After waiting for him to return and being unable to locate him, the family filed a missing person report.

Subsequently, some local youths informed the family that a young man had allegedly been killed and his body thrown into the Khajuri Khas drain. Ankit Sharma’s body was later recovered from the same drain.

Apart from the riots conspiracy case, Tahir Hussain is also facing proceedings in a money laundering case linked to the Delhi riots. In that case, co-accused Amit Gupta has turned approver and is serving as a prosecution witness.
