Guwahati, 05 May (HS): All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal has expressed strong displeasure over his party’s poor performance in the Assam Assembly elections, blaming the Congress for the outcome and launching a sharp political attack.
Speaking to the media during the counting of votes on Monday night, Ajmal said that the Congress has lost its political ground in Assam and has now turned into a party similar to the Muslim League. He asserted that the Congress is “finished” in the state amid the changing electoral landscape.
Despite the party’s dismal performance—its worst ever in the Assam Assembly elections with only two seats—Ajmal managed to stage a comeback in state politics by winning from the Binnakandi constituency. He defeated Assam Jatiya Parishad candidate Rezaul Karim Choudhury by a margin of 35,380 votes. Ajmal secured 1,19,721 votes, while Choudhury received 84,341 votes. The ruling alliance had fielded AGP candidate Shahabuddin Mazumdar, who finished third with 20,955 votes.
Ajmal’s victory marks his return to state politics after his defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he lost the Dhubri seat to Congress leader Rakibul Hussain. Prior to that, Ajmal had represented Dhubri in Parliament for three consecutive terms.
He entered electoral politics in 2006, a year after founding the AIUDF and won his first Assembly election from the South Salmara constituency. Since then, the party has maintained a presence in Assam politics and is often seen as representing Bengali-speaking Muslims in the state. Binnakandi, located in Hojai district, is one of the newly created constituencies following the 2023 delimitation, and Ajmal’s victory there provides his party an opportunity to establish a foothold in the region.----------
